The atmosphere at the Proact Stadium turned toxic during Chesterfield's 4-0 loss to play-off chasing Solihull Moors.
Goals from Nathan Blissett (2), Alex Gudger and Jermaine Hylton condemned the Blues to their heaviest loss of the season.
However, after the third goal, a group of fans stormed the pitch which temporarily brought the game to a stop.
Solihull took the lead on the fourth minute with their first attack of the game. Blissett - who Martin Allen admitted to trying to sign - latched onto a loose ball in the box before slotting the ball past Callum Burton.
Allen took action straight away. Michael Nelson, who made his first start September, was taken off before the tenth minute with Alfie Beestin replacing the centre-half.
This seemed to give the home side some confidence and suddenly Tim Flowers and his side were on the back foot.
Lee Shaw provided the hosts' first attack as he wriggled free from his marker before firing a shot which Ryan Boot smartly saved.
Chesterfield continued to look for the leveller and almost found it, but Levi Amantchi had his shot blocked before Shaw's cross was inches away from being tapped in by Curtis Weston.
Just before the half hour mark, the visitors doubled their lead through Blissett's second of the game. Liam Daly headed a corner across goal which Blissett nodded home.
The next quarter of an hour saw chances few and far between. Beestin almost pulled one back through his long-range shot, which was deflected just wide of the post.
Just a minute into the second half, the Spireites almost conceded a third as Wright made his way into the box forcing Burton into making a smart save at his near post.
Yet again, the game fell into a period of poor play from Chesterfield, and with 20 minutes to go things went from bad to worse.
Darren Carter whipped a fantastic free-kick into the box, which Alex Gudger rose highest to glance the ball into the back of the net.
The third goal was the trigger for some Spireites fans to walk onto the pitch and direct chants towards the exective box, forcing the players off for eight minutes.
Just five minutes after the restart, the Moors grabbed their fourth. Jermaine Hylton made his way past the defence before firing a low shot past Burton.
The result puts Chesterfield 22nd in the table, just a point behind Dover Athletic who occupy the place above the relegation zone. Hartlepool United visit the Proact Stadium on Saturday.
Post-Match Verdict: No festive cheer
I will quickly talk about the protest... I have no problem with discontent being voiced from the stands or outside the stadium.
However, that presentation on the pitch was absolutely pathetic; supporters should leave the pitch to the players to do their talking and voice their discontent in the stands or elsewhere.
Moving onto the Martin Allen, you could tell that result took a lot out of him. He described the game as "men versus boys".
The Spireites manager did also say that there was some good passages of play, which is true. However, the second goal was a big sucker punch to that momentum.
Next up is Hartlepool on Saturday. It will be very interesting to see how the players respond.
