Alfreton victors in enthralling Derbyshire Senior Cup final

Danny O'Brien's late winner earned Alfreton Town their 10th Derbyshire Senior Cup title.

Wednesday evening saw the final of the various county cups take place at Pride Park, as the Reds took on Mickleover Sports with both teams looking to gain silverware after disappointing league campaigns.

Alfreton got the game underway, and just before the 10 minute mark Richard Deniket flicked Sam Ramsbottom's free kick on for Danny O’Brien, who dinked Lewis King at his front post and gave Alfreton the advantage.

Minutes later, Mickleover scuffed a clearance which fell into the path of Deniket, whose chip was just about caught on the goal line by King.

After the early goal Alfreton dominated the play and carried on creating chances; in the 17th minute Reece Styche found space in the box and attempted to set up Danny O’Brien, but the attacker could only blaze his shot over.

For the next 10 minutes Alfreton controlled the game and tested Mickleover once again as a short corner was played to Jordon Sinnott who audaciously furnessed the ball towards the back post, but it was cleared off the line by a defender.

Another chance went for the Reds as Deniket tested King from range but the Sports 'keeper matched him brilliantly and palmed the ball away.

Just seconds later Mickleover launched a counter attack and Shaquille McDonald curled the ball just past Sam Ramsbottom but an Alfreton defender cleared it off the line heroically.

During the second half there was very little action for the first 20 minutes until Shaquille McDonald was fed through on goal for Mickleover, only for Ramsbottom to clear him out give the referee no choice but to award a penalty.

McDonald stepped up and sent Ramsbottom the wrong way and levelled the scoring with 20 minutes to go.

With just five minutes to go a low cross found O'Brien in the box and his deflected shot found the back of the net and put Alfreton 2-1 up with barely enough time for Mickleover to find a response.

O'Brien's brace was enough to win Alfreton thier 10th Derbyshire FA Senior Challenge Cup in front of a crowd of 401 very loud and supportive spectators.

Alfreton will hope they can push on and carry the momentum which comes with cup success into their final league game, whilst Mickleover will hope they can use thier defensive resilience in their battle for survival.
