Frank Lampard in talks with Chelsea

The news that Derby fans were dreading to see. Chelsea are in talks with Frank Lampard over the vacant managerial position at Stamford Bridge.

There aren’t many who know Chelsea Football Club as well as Lampard. Chelsea's leading goalscorer made 429 appearances for the West London club and won just about every trophy there is to win. This is all well and good, but many speculate Frank becoming Chelsea manager is too soon for him and too soon for Chelsea.

Lampard started his managerial career only last season at Derby County. His side including Chelsea loanees Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori played exciting football and with the help of assistant Jody Morris. Lampard guided the Rams to the Championship play-off final for the first time since 2014. There is no question that the departure of Lampard would be a big blow for the Rams with the impression he has made in his short time at the club.

With pre-season looming it would also leave the East Midlands club with little time to realistically find their manager. Many speculate that Frank will leave to take on his dream-job. Former Brighton manager Chris Houghton and former Birmingham boss Garry Monk are being spoke about by many as likely replacements. Derby will demand compensation of £4 million, which will be no obstacle for the side from Stamford Bridge. However, surely the five time Premier League champions would prefer a more experienced head?

Despite the Blues being one of the best clubs in the world the managerial position isn’t the most attractive job to most, especially after losing Eden Hazard and being under a transfer embargo. Not many elite and proven managers will want to go to a club where they can’t bring in their own players.

Whoever it is that becomes the Chelsea manager is going to have to look towards youth and who better than Frank Lampard and Jody Morris? Morris worked with the development squad at Chelsea from 2014-2018, until he joined Derby with Lampard and obviously the main man himself knows the club inside out.

Chelsea employing a manager with only one year of managerial experience at at Championship club sounds crazy, but whoever they employ is a risk. He will certainly have a connection with the fans on another level, already being a Chelsea legend. How could Lampard turn down the opportunity to manage the club he fell in love with for so many years?

If Frank does go to Chelsea, will it turn out to be a good appointment. And who will Derby get in to replace the former England international.
