Matlock Town fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Whitby Town as the Gladiators stay dangerously close to the northern Premier League relegation zone
The home side started out as the better of the two sides with new loan signing Jude Oyibo creating a good chance after some great dribbling play. Another opportunity came within seconds after some passing play that ended with a Yates cross not being able to be met.
Matlock continued to have a lot of the ball for the first 15 minutes of the game and Chib Chilaka almost got the first goal when the ball came to him and his shot rose over the bar.
Whitby‘s first opening came when they won a free-kick just on the edge of the box with Callum Patton striking the ball wide of the goal. This bought some life into the away side as they got some more hope only a few minutes later when Paul Blackett took the ball round Bailey Gooda but was well stopped by the home defence.
The deadlock was broken In the 22nd minute when a corner for the visitors corner was met by Alex White's downward header, who got to the ball first in front of a out-rushing Jake Greatorex.
Greatorax did pick up his game and made a outstanding save from a Matty Tyson shot, tipping the ball over the bar.
Adam Yates responded to this with one of his many crosses in this game which Oyibo picked up but couldn’t get a good enough shot away as it glanced just over.
The rest of the half was evenly poised with both sides having their fair share of possession. However, neither could get a goal as the Gladiators went into the break 0-1 down.
Matlock started the half as they meant to go on with them being on top for the rest of the game. Tomas Poole had a driven shot which came close and went just wide.
Shortly after this Yates came from deep in defence and hit a cracker of a shot which meant a deflection forced the Whitby keeper into a good save.
The Seasiders struggles to regain any over the ball back with them throwing some quite nasty tackles in and overreacting to the Matlock challenges. The encounters lead to a few yellow cards being brandished.
Dean became the latest home player to look for an equaliser. However, like the rest of Matlock's opportunities, it lacked that final killer instinct as his long shot failed to find the back of the net.
After all of Matlock’s dominance was ended with the arrival of the away side's second goal. Patton played a low ball through to substitute Bradley Fewster, who tapped home.
Matlock tried there hardest to at least get a consolation but even after all their second half efforts they lived to regret there misses losing the game 2-0. Matlock Town: Greatorex, Yates, Gordon, Dean, Wiley, Gooda, Oyibo (Bramall 58), Valentine, Chilaka (Crouz 80), Marshall, Poole (Scrivens 70).
Unused Substitutes: Tague, Roberts.
