NATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH REPORT: BUXTON WIN IN THE LAST MINUTE ON OPENING DAY

A spa derby to open the season, with Buxton taking on Leamington at the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium. A last-minute goal for Ben Sault earned Buxton 3 points on the opening day of the season.

The home side started brightly, and it wasn’t long before they got the opener when after only 15 minutes Tommy Elliott put the ball in the back of the net. A low driven cross from Ben Sault found Elliott in the middle and he finished it into the corner to make it 1-0.

Leamington’s keeper tried to get the ball to William Shorrock out wide but he slipped leaving Ethan Fitzhugh to pounce on the ball and get a low driven shot which Callum Hawkins saved.

Only moments later centre back Kieran Burton played a ball all the way up the pitch through to Fitzhugh and under pressure his shot went into the keepers hands.

Burton then had a chance himself heading wide from a freekick crossed into the box.

Despite a lot of the pressure in the first half Buxton were unable to find the back of the net again with Leamington capitalising just before halftime. Callum Stewart turned and smashed it in at the post to make it 1-1 going into the break.

The second half was a lot calmer with a lot of poor passing plays from both sides.

Leamington’s best chance of the half came on the 72nd minute with Tim Bedrridge going on a solo run and beating 3 players before putting a low driven shot into the hands of True Grant.

But it was Buxton who picked up a late win and 3 points as Sault buddled the ball through and past the keeper to make it 2-1 in the final stages.
