Phillip Cocu’s side will be looking for a response in the early kick off on Saturday, following a frustrating 2-1 defeat to Bristol City, earlier in the week.

The Rams failed to cause too many issues for the Robins midweek and will be looking to improve their forward play against a tough West Brom side.

The Opposition

The visitors come into the game in 6th, after an unbeaten start to the league campaign. The Baggies have been tested however, being somewhat fortunate to earn a point against Reading and dropping points to Millwall at the Hawthorns.

The Baggies finished last season in the playoffs, succumbing to Aston Villa in the semi-final through a penalty shootout. With the loss of key players such as Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez, it was imperative that the midlands side rebuilt and have done so with signings such as Charlie Austin.

Previous meetings

The two sides played each other twice last season, both finishing as resounding victories for the Rams. The first game finished as a comfortable 4-1 victory, as Jack Marriott, Tom Lawrence, Harry Wilson and Scott Malone all got on the scoresheet at the Hawthorns.

The second game ensured that Derby finished in the playoffs, as Martyn Waghorn, Mason Bennett and Wilson all scored to put West Brom to the sword in a 3-1 victory.

Team News

The Rams are set to be without Duane Holmes, who is still making his recovery from injury but will be getting minutes for the U23s Friday afternoon. Jack Marriott is unlikely to start but will be available from the bench, due to fitness issues.

West Brom are set to be without Hal Robson-Kanu, due to back injury, as well as Ahmed Hegazi due to an ankle injury which the defender required surgery for.

Manager’s thoughts

Cocu believes West Brom are a “strong team” and believes it will be a big “test” for his side: “They try to play football as well – with technical, good players. That’s the type of football I like, so I’m looking forward to the game.”

The boss also doesn’t think of a “best eleven”, but rather different players for different situations, saying: “We have different players with different qualities, and if they perform well, we will use them.”
