PREVIEW: Derby looking for third successive home win against Wigan Athletic

The Rams are back in midweek Championship action as they welcome Paul Cook’s Wigan at Pride Park on Wednesday.

Phillip Cocu’s side are off the back of a humbling in the capital at Charlton but find themselves in good stead at home following two victories at Pride Park.

The Opposition

Wigan come into the game in 18th, just a point behind Derby, with three wins in their last five games.

Cook has typically set up Wigan in a 4-2-3-1 formation, occasionally switching to a 4-4-2 when needed. Wigan have been more than happy to surrender possession to opposition in their games, none more so than a home loss to Leeds United in which the Latics only managed 24% possession.

Previous Meetings

The Rams got the better of the visitors on both occasions last season. The first of which was a 1-0 victory at the DW Stadium, courtesy of a first half Jack Marriott header.

The second was at Pride Park in March, where Mason Bennett’s incredible strike inspired a Derby comeback after going 1-0 down through Gavin Massey. Scott Malone poked home from range to complete the turnaround and gift Derby all three points.

Team News

Striker Jack Marriott could feature once again for Derby, following ongoing injury issues.

Wigan will be without Nathan Byrne, who serves a match ban for picking up five yellow cards. Jamal Lowe could be a doubt following a knock on Sunday’s game against Nottingham Forest. Sam Morsy is available once again for the Latics after serving a game ban for five yellow cards.
