PREVIEW: Lye Town vs Gresley FC

This weekend Gresley travel to fellow strugglers Lye Town in a crucial clash in the relegation battle.

After claiming a gutsy 0-0 draw with promotion-chasing Coventry United at the Moat Ground, Gresley will look to end their six game winless run at fellow strugglers, Lye Town, in what will be a pivotal match as both teams look to stave off relegation.

Lye Town currently sit 18th in the Midland Premier League with 14 points from 22 games, whilst Gresley sit just one place and two points below their opponents. If Gresley can seal just a second away league victory of the season they’ll leapfrog Lye and strengthen their survival bid. A loss, however, would see the home side move five points clear of the Moatmen and ease their relegation fears.

A Look at the Opposition

Last time out for the Flyers ended in disappointment as they fell to a 2-1 home defeat to Coventry Sphinx. Reiss Taylor-Randle’s third minute strike looked as if it would seal Lye an important three points - yet a 73rd minute strike from Louis Guest and a stoppage time winner from Charlie Faulkner broke Lye hearts, as they slumped to defeat.

Lye Town have not had happy few games recently, winning just once in their last five and losing the other four. A 5-0 loss to Tividale compounded their recent run, yet a 1-0 victory over Racing Club Warwick has given the Flyers hope that they can avoid a scrappy relegation fight.

Gresley will also be hopeful that they can claim all three points when considering Lye’s recent home form. Despite a 1-0 win over Warwick, Town have lost three of their last four home games, and if they can replicate the performance against Boldmere St Michaels, the Moatmen will have a great chance at claiming just their third three-point haul of the season.

The two sides have met already this season, and it was not a good day for Gresley. A damaging 3-1 defeat at the end of September underlined the dismal start to the season that Gresley had endured. Yet, the Moatmen have been much improved of late and the Flyers will certainly face a much tougher prospect on Saturday.

One to Watch

One player to watch for the home side is Jordan Davies. Davies has been a near ever-present for the Flyers this season, scoring twice and picking up five player of the match awards.

The match between Lye Town and Gresley will take place at the Sports Ground in Stourbridge on Saturday 25th January at 15:00.
