Chesterfield travel to Edgeley Park for what looks to be another difficult game. The Spireites need to find a win sooner or later as they are now without a win in their first six games this campaign.
However, John Sheridan’s men have managed to pick up a point from all three away fixtures this season and will be looking to maintain their unbeaten away record.
The Opposition
The Hatters have certainly had their own struggles in the last few years after suffering relegation to the National League in 2011 which ended their 106 year stay in the Football League.
County were relegated again in 2013, where they found themselves in the National League North.
But Stockport look to be on the up after a fantastic season last term. Jim Gannon’s side managed to reach the second round of the FA Cup after beating Yeovil Town at Huish Park, they reached the FA Trophy semi-finals, eventually losing out to Fylde, but most importantly won promotion back into the National League, finishing the season as champions.
Despite an opening day defeat to Maidenhead, County have been victorious in their other two home fixtures against Barrow and Eastleigh. They looked set to take away a point from their last game, at Harrogate, but a 93rd minute winner from the home side meant Stockport would go home empty handed.
One To Watch
Frank Mulhern- The Irish U19 International joined the Hatters this Summer from Guiseley. He has experience at a similar level with loan spells at Harrogate, Alfreton Town and Bradford Park Avenue.
Last season Mulhern’s goals played a key part in their title winning season, with the striker finishing second highest goalscorer behind highly-rated Matty Warburton, who earnt a move to Northampton Town in the Summer.
Previous Meetings
Chesterfield’s last encounter was in 2011 at Edgeley Park. Paul Turnball, who is still at the club now, put the Hatters in front but Dean Smalley nodded in an equaliser and the game finished 1-1.
The older Chesterfield supporters will remember when Chesterfield reached Wembley for the first time by beating Stockport 6-0 on aggregate in the 1990 League Two play-offs.
Team News
It is very likely that Sheridan will make some changes to the side that faced Barrow on Saturday. The Spireites gaffer admitted that he got the team selection wrong.
In form striker Mike Fondop bagged his third goal in two games this weekend and should keep his place in the side as long as he is fit, after having a “bang on his knee” in Saturday's game.
Sheridan’s Thoughts
Despite a poor performance against Barrow, Sheridan said they have “got to stick together”.
He hopes that the salvaged point it could turn out to be a turning point.
But the Spireites gaffer is confident he will turn it around. He knows the game tomorrow will be a tough game but hopes his side could be spurred on by a good away following.
