Alfreton Town had a chance to atone for their disastrous F.A.Cup elimination when Leamington F.C. visited the lmpact Arena on Tuesday night, and a much improved performance earned them a slender win and their first clean sheet of the season.
Bailey Hobson emerged as the Reds' hero with a 73rd minute strike from outside the area just moments after seeing another effort blocked, the goal stemming from Yusifu Ceesay's mesmerising skills on the left-flank.
After another bland opening 45 minutes, during which a curling shot from Ceesay was the only effort on target for either side, Alfreton dominated after the break to thoroughly deserve their victory.
Matt Rhead saw his header from a 58th minute corner cleared, then the visitors responded with Kyle Morrison heading wide from a Joe Parker free-kick.
A sharp Dayle Southwell cross was headed clear by Steph Morley and Conor Branson's shot was blocked after more good approach work by Ceesay.
After taking the lead Ceesay dragged a good chance just past the back post, then Leamington's Jack Lane fired low and hard but could not beat George Willis in the Reds' goal.
Four minutes from time Hobson was sent through by a sublime through-ball from Rob Evans, but this time was thwarted by keeper Jake Weaver, the game concluding with a Rhead shot that was also blocked.
