REPORT: Chesterfield 0-0 Aldershot Town- a game that somehow remained goalless

Chesterfield somehow couldn't find the back of the net and were forced to settle for a point in what was their first draw of the season.

James Rowe made one change to the side that beat Weymouth 2-1 at the weekend. Liam Mandeville came in to replace Joe Rowley.

The gaffer also made a double signing on Tuesday evening. Jak McCourt and Tom Whelan came straight onto the bench to face Aldershot.

In the opening minutes Mo Bettamer cannoned a shot towards goal but the striker’s effort smashed against the advertising boards.

A few minutes later Akwasi Asnte and Tom Denton linked up well. The latter knocked down to Asante who layed the ball off back to Denton who was off balance firing high and wide.

In the 32rd minute Curtis Weston let fly from outside area but his effort took a deflection and was palmed out for a corner by Brad James in the Aldershot goal.

Up the other end Chike Kandi struck the ball powerfully but it was straight down Kyle Letheren’s throat.

The two teams went into the interval level with neither team managing to break the deadlock.

Liam Mandeville had a big chance to take the lead just before the hour mark when he closed down Shots ‘keeper James but couldn’t steer the ball into the empty net.

A few minutes later Will Evans’ mis-kicked clearance nearly snuck into the corner of his own net.

McCourt was subbed on for Jonathan Smith with 20 minutes to go and nearly opened the scoring with his first touch. James’ poor goal-kick fell to the midfielder who struck the ball first time and looked destined for goal before James scampered back to tip over the bar.

In the 72nd minute Laurence Maguire latched onto David Buchanan’s corner but glanced his header wide.

At the other end Bettamer powerfully headed on target but it was straight at Letheren, therefore claimed comfortably.

The Spireites had the ball in the back of the net on 79 minutes but the flag was up. Whelan’s strike from the left came off substitute Scott Boden and into the net but the goal was ruled out for offside.

The visitors were reduced to ten men for the last ten minutes as Chesterfield continued to push on for a winner. Alfy Whittingham received a straight red for a reckless challenge on Spireites left back David Buchanan.

Jordan Cropper delivered a low ball into the area which bounced off numerous bodies before finding Denton who was denied by James.

Minutes later James was called into action again when Weston looked like finding the top corner but the 'keeper pulled off a magnificent save to keep the scores level.

In injury time Cropper provided the perfect ball for Denton who rose well and headed towards goal however Kodi Lyons-Foster was on the line to clear for the Shots.

Somehow Chesterfield couldn’t get the ball over the line and the two sides claimed a point apiece in what was the Spireites’ first draw of the season.

Chesterfield(3-5-2): Letheren; Evans, Hollis, Maguire; Cropper, Smith (McCourt 70’), Weston, Mandeville (Whelan 60'), Buchanan; Asante (Boden 78’), Tom Denton
