Despite numerous chances the Spireites failed to capitalise and retuned back to England with a single point against fellow play-off contenders Wrexham.
New signing Danny Rowe came into the side as did Joel Taylor who made his first start for a month. Jack Clarke also returned to the eleven along with goalkeeper Grant Smith who reclaimed his place.
Chesterfield started well and put Wrexham under some early pressure with three corners inside the opening five minutes.
The Spireites had a penalty shout when Kairo Mitchell was pushed inside the area by Shaun Pearson however referee Simon Mather waved away the appeals.
The hosts also appealed for a spot-kick after a Rowe handball. Their appeals were also dismissed.
In the 12th minute the hosts had an opportunity when Gold Omatayo latched onto a smart through-ball from Jordan Davies. Laurence Maguire got the right side of the Wrexham forward to put the ball out for a corner.
By the half hour mark it would have been 1-1 if it wasn’t for the excellent work of the two goalkeepers.
First off for the visitors, Rowe played a perfect ball over the top to Mitchell who brought it down and fired an effort at goal, forcing Rob Lainton into a smart save.
Then Omatayo made a good run and unleaded a shot which bounced awkwardly at Grant Smith who reacted well to turn the ball round the post for a corner.
Chesterfield began the second half as they did the first and put Dean Keates’ men under pressure.
Two minutes in Clarke caused problems when he drove forward and found Mitchell whose powerful strike was gathered by Lainton.
The chances continued to arrive for the Spirietes when Joel Taylor’s cross/shot cannoned off the bar before Fraser Kerr’s resulting strike was cleared off the line.
Wrexham nearly broke the deadlock when a long ball into the box took a deceiving bounce and forced Smith to tip over the upward.
Rowe made a double substitution with Nathan Tyson and Tom Whelan coming on to replace Clarke and Mitchell.
Tyson’s first effort saw Lainton produce a diving save to his left.
Three minutes from time Whelan broke down the left and found Rowe. The debutant played a smart ball across the face of goal to Tyson who’s powerful effort was straight at Lainton.
James Rowe's continued to battle to get the goal but the two sides shared the points despite Chesterfield dominating.
Chesterfield (3-5-2): Smith, Carline, Kerr, Gunning (C), Maguire, Taylor, Oyeleke, Weston, Clarke (Whelan 72), Mitchell (Tyson 72), Rowe.
