Dronfield Town secured passage into the third round of the Derbyshire Cup with a morale boosting 3-0 win over Notts Senior League side, Borrowash Victoria. Second half strikes from Joe Pearson, Callum Mawbey and Matty Ord put Chris Millington’s side into the draw with the likes of Chesterfield FC and Derby County as they laid siege to the visitors goal for long periods of the encounter. All sixteen players were used on the night, giving valuable game time to the squad ahead of a home league match against near-neighbours Shirebrook Town.
Dronfield made five changes from the team that drew 0-0 against Glasshoughton on Saturday and one of those changes, James Lindores went down in the area just 2 minutes in; the referee waiving away any claims for a penalty.
The prolific under 21’s striker was a constant menace down the right flank throughout the first half. His run on 20 minutes ended in Joe Pearson’s shot being charged down and on 29 minutes when fed by Callum Mawbey, the young forward probably should have hit the target instead of his shot going wide.
Lindores continued to excel on the right wing however. A deep cross on 31 minutes once again found Pearson at the back post, whose header was blocked by the Borrowash defence.
Borrowash’s best efforts came from the pacy Paul Johnson. On 33 minutes, a ball in from the right forced Lewis Naylor to save at the lively frontman’s feet.
James Lindores almost opened Town’s account before the end of the half. Matt Crowe’s low cross from the left hand side was met by Lindores, who again fired wide with the goal at his mercy.
The Dronfield attacking urge went up a notch in the second half. Just three minutes after the restart, Sam Bebbington’s deflected cross in from the right found the busy Lindores, whose close range attempt was put out for a corner.
A sustained spell of pressure eventually resulted in a Dronfield goal. Ethan Flower’s inswinging corner was headed back across goal by Callum Mawbey with no Town player able to make a final decisive touch.
However, just moments later good work by Knight and Crowe put Joe Pearson in the clear and he made no mistake from 12 yards out to make it 1-0.
Town made an immediate triple substitution with Crowe, Knight and Flower being replaced by Chapell, Fereday and Lester.
Connor Chapell was to make an instant impact on 61 minutes when his cross was met by the head of top scorer Callum Mawbey for his ninth of the season and Dronfield’s second of the evening.
Dronfield ensured all five substitutes got game time as Regan Rooke and Matty Ord came on for Mawbey and Lindores and it was Ord who was to put Town’s name into the bag for the next round.
On 78 minutes, a delightful interchange of passes between Ord and Mark Fereday saw the tricky wide man stroke home low to Tom Smith’s left to make it 3-0.
With confidence visibly lifted, Dronfield even allowed a foray up front from centre half Arran Bovill, whose strike from the edge of the area just curled wide.
The win gives Town passage into the third round of the competition where the likes of Chesterfield, Derby County and Alfreton Town join the draw which takes place on Thursday 17th November.
Dronfield are back at home on Saturday (19th November) when Shirebrook Town are the visitors in the latest Northern Counties East League Division One match.
