REPORT: Early salvo sees Dronfield to big win

David Bell

Four goals in the opening half hour put Dronfield Town well on the way to a 5-0 success against Ollerton Town. Strikes from Mark Fereday, Max Rhodes, Callum Mawbey and Tom Staniland were added to late in the second half by Sam Bebbington as the North Derbyshire side got back to winning ways. Ollerton, humbled 11-0 by Wakefield on Saturday, put in a plucky second half display especially after losing their keeper Dylan Hough to injury on the half hour mark. The win takes Dronfield back up to 13th in the table ahead of the visit of bottom side Swallownest to the HE Barnes Stadium on Saturday.

Dronfield, employing a 3-5-2 formation, began the game with purpose and soon got off the mark. The second minute saw Max Rhodes feed fellow striker Mark Fereday, who rounded the Ollerton stopper and tapped into the empty goal to make it 1-0.

It only took another three minutes for Town to double their lead. A terrific header won in midfield by Cam Knight put Rhodes in the clear, who raced on and lobbed the keeper for Dronfield’s second.

Rhodes, restored to the starting line up, tested Hough with a 25 yarder that was tipped over the bar but the thirteenth minute saw Dronfield claim their third.

Charlie Stewart stood up a neat ball from the left hand side that was comfortably headed home by Callum Mawbey at the back post to make it 3-0.

Town’s dominance continued as the chances came thick and fast. A long ball forward by Arran Bovill on 21 minutes found Mark Fereday, who found his low strike being beaten away by the legs of Hough.

The fourth came on 28 minutes. Tom Staniland, relatively unchallenged, unleashed a low left footed drive from around 25 yards out that skipped across the turf and into the bottom corner as Dronfield threatened to run riot.

To make matters worse, Ollerton goalkeeper Dylan Hough had to depart the game having picked up an earlier knock, to be replaced by centre half Tom Chambers as emergency stand-in stopper.

The Nottinghamshire outfit refused to roll over in a hard-working second half however.

A minute after the restart, Dan White’s long ball out of defence was lifted over the bar by Fereday and on 55 minutes, Mawbey struck the base of the post as the visitors failed to fully clear a trademark Sam Bebbington long throw.

Fereday was sent to the sin bin on 59 minutes as the visitors showed some fighting spirit. Josh Brentnall cut inside from the left flank and whistled a rising shot just wide of Lewis Naylor’s far post.

Both sides rang the changes in the middle of the half; Dronfield in an attempt to utilise their squad and Ollerton to capitalise on a much improved second half performance.

Dronfield ended the game strongly as a result. Nick Benson’s shot ten minutes from time was tipped out of play by Chambers and from the resulting corner, Sam Bebbington struck the post.

The same player claimed Dronfield’s fifth in the 85th minute however. Stewart’s deep free kick from the left hand side was headed in at the far post by utility man Bebbington to wrap up the three points for the home side.

The win sees Dronfield move up to 13th place in amongst a group of seven teams separated by just 5 points. Next up at the HE Barnes Stadium are bottom club Swallownest, prior to a run of games against the sides in the upper echelons of the division.
