REPORT: Late Denton equaliser rescues a point for Spireites

Updated: Dec 2, 2019

Substitute Tom Denton’s injury time header rescued a 2-2 draw against Aldershot Town at the EBB Stadium.

John Sheridan made four changes to the side who were subject to a 5-1 thrashing against Hartlepool United. New full-back Matt Tootle came straight into the side, while Curtis Weston, Anthony Gerrard and David Buchanan reclaimed a place in the starting eleven.

The opening 20 minutes were rather underwhelming from both sides with little happening for both sides.

The most dangerous chance of the first half came for the home side in the 37th minute when Lewis Kinsella’s cross found the head of Mo Bettamer in a dangerous position but Gerrard was there to head out for a corner.

Three minutes later the Spireites had a chance of their own when Gevaro played a low ball across the face of goal but no one was there to tap home.

On the stroke of half time, the Shots were awarded a penalty for Laurence Maguire’s foul on Bettamer. Ethan Chislett stepped up to the spot, firing home into the back of the net to put his side up a goal to the good going into the the second half.

Just five minutes into the second half, Sheridan’s men found their equaliser. Gerrard headed on Jay Sheridan’s corner for Scott Boden to flick in to put the teams on level terms.

Aldershot had a chance to take the lead on the hour mark when Robbie Tinkler found Bettamer but the striker saw his glancing header fly wide.

In the 70th minute the home side took the lead again. Weston's challenge inadvertently found Jack Powell, who struck the ball into the net to put his side back in the lead.

Three minutes later Lewis Kinsella protected the Shots lead as he cleared Denton’s header off the line. However, the striker grabbed an equaliser in the 4th minute of additional time when he was at the back post to head in from Weston's cross.

The draw keeps Chesterfield in the bottom four, two points behind Sutton United in 20th. Sheridan's side welcome Bromley to the Proact Stadium next weekend.
