REPORT: Late Solihull equaliser denies Spireites

Early goals from Mike Fondop and Jack McKay weren’t enough for three points as Chesterfield allowed Solihull Moors to come back from two goals down to grab a late 2-2 draw.

John Sheridan was forced into making two changes from the side that were victorious over Torquay United. Will Evans and Josef Yarney returned to replace Anthony Gerrard and Robbie Weir.

Chesterfield took the lead inside the first 20 seconds. Mike Fondop headed it down to Jack McKay, who played it back to the striker inside the area who then tucked the ball into the bottom right corner.

However, the visitors nearly levelled three minutes later when Jamey Osbourne’s long-range strike took a big deflection, forcing Shwan Jalal to palm out for a corner.

Jalal protected his side’s lead again just five minutes later he found himself one-on-one with Nathan Blissit, but the Spireites ‘keeper managed to keep it out with his chest.

Despite some pressure from the visitors, Chesterfield doubled their lead in the 19th minute. Fondop put McKay through, who was in space to fire it into the back of the net.

In the 27th minute Osbourne saw his cross headed over by Evans. The resulting corner found Callum Howe who’s effort looked destined for the bottom corner but Jalal was there to make another important stop.

The visitors did manage to claw one back on the edge of half time. Jamie Ball picked up the ball inside the area and his effort took a deflection into the far corner of the net.

In the 53rd minute Evans gave the ball away to Paul McCallum who was in a dangerous position but Laurence Maguire was there to dispossess the Solihull leading goalscorer.

Maguire was later stretchered off with a serious injury on the hour mark with Jonathan Smith taking the midfielder's place.

The Spireites came close in the 77th minute when Yarney whipped a ball into Fondop but the striker headed over.

But Tim Flowers’ side were to find their equaliser in the 5th minute of stoppage time. Substitute Danny Wright’s bullet header flew past Jalal and into the net.

Chesterfield: Jalal, Yarney, Sheridan, Evans (C), Hollis, Weston, Fondop, Buchanan, Maguire, McKay (Rowley 46), Gevaro.

Unused Substitutes: Boden, Denton, Mandeville, Smith.

Attendance: 3203 (85 away)
