Second half goals from Tom Denton and Jonathan Smith secured Chesterfield’s 2-0 victory over Eastleigh and second win on the bounce.
John Pemberton made three changes to the side that faced Sutton. Jamie Sharman, Tom Denton and new loan signing Jordan Cropper came into the starting eleven.
The Spireites started slowly and the home side could’ve taken the lead inside the opening six minutes. Captain Danny Hollands met a cross from the far side and headed his effort towards goal but Shwan Jalal was there to make a smart stop for the Spireites.
Chesterfield’s only opportunity to speak of in the opening 20 minutes was courtesy of Denton who met Cropper’s delivery from the right, however the striker’s header bounced in front of the Eastleigh keeper Max Stryjek and he claimed comfortably.
The biggest change of the first half fell to Scott Boden on the edge of half time. He received the ball from Sharman but his volley was stopped by Stryjek, meaning the two teams would go into the second half on level terms.
The Spireites started the second half much better than they did the first, breaking the deadlock in the 54th minute. Boden provided the perfect ball for Denton to head into the right corner of the net.
In the 74th minute Barnett headed Payne’s free-kick towards goal, forcing Jalal to tip over.
Minutes later the Spireites’ keeper made a magnificent save keeping out Holland’s at the near post.
The Spireites soaked up the Eastleigh pressure well and were able to get their second of the afternoon with ten minutes to play. David Buchanan played a short corner, initially looking for Liam Mandeville, but the ball fell to Smith on the edge of the penalty area who struck the ball into the roof of the net.
