REPORT: Spireites fall short against Harrogate in thrilling encounter

Chesterfield fell to a 4-3 defeat as Jack Muldoon’s injury time strike won it at the death for Harrogate Town.

John Pemberton opted for one change to his starting eleven. Nathan Tyson earned his place in the team following his hat-trick off the bench against Ebbsfleet, meaning that Mike Fondop had to settle for a place on the bench.

Johnathan Smith recorded the first chance of the game when his effort from outside the box looped over.

The visitors took the lead in the 9th minute when Wayne Burrell produced an inch-perfect cross for Jon Stead to powerfully head into the back of the net.

The Spireites nearly levelled a couple of minutes later when David Buchanan’s free-kick found Will Evans. The defender's header forced keeper James Belshaw to produce a fine save, tipping the ball over for a corner.

Belshaw was called into action again in the 19th minute when Smith’s strike from the edge of the area looked like sneaking into the bottom left corner until the Harrogate keeper palmed it away from goal. The rebound fell to Tom Denton who couldn’t muster an effort on goal.

The Spireites managed to level on 26 minutes when Tyson picked out Jordan Cropper, allowing him to break down the right and whip the ball in for Denton to tap home.

The home side found themselves infront three minutes later Tyson flicked the ball over the Harrogate defence to Liam Mandeville who poked home from close-range.

Not long after it was all square again when George Thomson equalised for the visitors. Jack Diamond’s strike was saved by Shwan Jalal but the rebound fell to Thomson who fired into the roof of the net.

Simon Weaver’s side could have taken the lead when Burrell latched onto Thomson’s corner but his header was cleared off the line by Cropper.

In the 54th minute Jack Diamond cut in from the left and fired a strike into the corner past Jalal, but after deliberating with the linesman, the referee ruled the goal out for a handball in the build up.

However, Harrogate did manage to take the lead on the hour mark when a long ball from the left was nodded in by Stead.

The Spireites nearly levelled when Evans headed Buchanan’s corner back towards goal finding Tyson but then striker couldn’t convert as his close-range strike flew the wrong side of the post.

Proceedings were back on level terms in the 82nd minute when substitute Regan Hutchinson’s cross met Denton at the far post. His header fell to Scott Boden who tapped in from close range.

However, Harrogate Town managed to snatch all three points as they grabbed a 93rd minute winner when top-scorer Muldoon met Diamond’s low cross to fire past Jalal.

The loss keeps Chesterfield in the relegation zone but John Pemberton's side can take many positives despite the defeat to the high-flying Yorkshire side.

Chesterfield: Jalal, Buchanan, Hollis, Yarney (Hutchinson 66) Cropper, Weston, Smith, Mandeville (Fondop 66) Denton, Tyson (Boden 78).

Unused Substitutes: Fitzimons, Weir.
