REPORT: Spireites forced to settle for a point in relegation zone clash

Jonathan Smith's opener was cancelled out by Nick Haughton’s second half equaliser as the Spireites drew 1-1 at home to Fylde.

John Pemberton opted for just one change to the side that claimed all three points against Eastleigh last weekend. Jamie Sharman made way for Josef Yarney to come into the team.

The Coasters claimed the first game shot of the game with Haughton seeing his effort from 25 yards out comfortably saved by Shwan Jalal.

Chesterfield had the chance to take the lead 9 minutes in when Jordan Cropper whipped the perfect ball into Tom Denton at the back post, but Coasters’ keeper Sam Hornby managed to keep the striker’s header out of the net.

In the 32nd minute Jordan Williams went one-on-one with Jalal. However, moments later the ball was in the back of the net at the other end when Smith made it three goals in three games by firing his shot into the bottom left corner.

The Coasters has a change to equaliser when Haughton cut past Wedgbury to have a shot, but his weak strike was straight at Jalal and the Spireites went into the interval a goal ahead.

The visitors had the first chance of the second half when Tom Walker saw his effort from the right roll across the face of goal, inches wide of the bottom left corner.

A minute later Cropper made a great run into the box but he was dispossessed by former Spireite Alex Whitmore before he could get a shot on goal.

In the 64th minute the Coasters came close when Haughton played Williams one-on-one with Jalal. The Spireites shot-stopper made another brilliant save, before Yarney headed the ball off the line to keep his side in the lead.

Jalal made another great save less than ten minutes later when a cross came in from the left which was then headed towards goal by a Williams.

The away side got their equaliser in the 77th minute when Haughton hit a half-volley into the back of the net.

But the Spireites responded well and Will Evans saw his powerful header come back off the crossbar, but it wasn’t enough to secure all three points.

Unused Substitutes: Wharton, Sharman.
