Torquay United claimed their first ever league win at the Technique Stadium thanks to goals from Connor Lemonheigh-Evans and Billy Waters either side of half-time.
James Rowe made five changes to his starting eleven. Gavin Gunning, Martin Smith, Alex Whittle, Kairo Mitchell and Liam Mandeville came into the side to replace Josef Yarney, Curtis Weston, Joel Taylor, Nathan Tyson and Jack Clarke.
A chance for Chesterfield to take an an early lead came when Mandeville’s ball across goal found Mitchell, but the striker couldn’t direct his header on target.
However the visitors took the lead in the 11th minute through Lemonheigh-Evans. The Spireites failed to react to a smart move from the Gulls allowing Jake Andrews time and room to provide a perfectly weighted ball for the Welshman who finished with aplomb past Grant Smith.
The Gulls went close to doubling their lead in the 21st minute when Andrews’ low strike from the edge of the penalty area crept wide.
George Carline went centimetres away from levelling for the Spirietes when his header was cleared off the line by Adam Randell.
The Spireites trailed by a goal to nil at the break and Rowe made his first change seven minutes into the second half when Adi Yussuf replaced Mitchell.
Yussuf looked a handful from the off and nearly equalised for Town when he was one-on-one with Gulls ‘keeper Lucas Covolan. His strike looked destined to roll over the line at the far post but somehow Dean Moxey got back to clear.
The Gulls doubled their lead in the 76th minute against the run of play, when the ball fell to Waters just outside the box who smashed home past Smith.
Despite some smart build-up play and a few good chances Chesterfield failed to find the back of the net and were handed a second successive defea.
Gary Johnson’s men extended their lead at the top of the National League as the race for the title hots up.
