Scott Boden’s early first-half strike proved enough to seal Chesterfield’s first win of the season with a 1-0 win over Torquay United.
John Sheridan made three changes to the side that fell to defeat down at Bromley. Mike Fondop, Jermaine McGlashan and the injured Anthony Gerrard made way for Joe Rowley, Hayden Hollis and the rerturning Tom Denton to come into the side.
In the opening minute Jamie Reid put a header on target, but the tame effort hardly tested Luke Coddington.
The first opportunity for the home side fell to Scott Boden who nodded his chance wide of the left post.
The visitors could have took the lead just four minutes in when Kalvin Kalala crossed a low powerful ball into Reid, but the National League top scorer missed the target.
However, it was Chesterfield who took the lead in the 11th minute. Curtis Weston looped a ball over the Gulls’ defence which found Boden, who fired home into the bottom right of the net, to put his side into the lead.
The Spireites nearly doubled their lead ten minutes later Denton connected with Mandeville’s corner, but the header was cleared off the line.
Mandeville was involved again when he forced Gulls’ goalkeeper Lucas Covolan into action in additional time as his outstretched arm sent Mandeville’s curling effort for a corner.
With the second half underway, the away side put some dangerous balls toward the Chesterfield goal but neither Reid or Manny Duku could convert them into an equaliser.
Ben Whitfield played a ball into the box but the effort flew just above Reid’s head and out of play.
Chesterfield were put on the back foot as Gary Johnson’s men continued to hunt for an equaliser.
Curtis Weston’s sloppy pass fell to Reid, but the striker failed to capitalise as he saw his effort roll past the post.
Torquay looked destined to find an equaliser in additional time when it was Will Evans vs Jamie Reid inside the area, but the Spireites skipper produced a superb tackle to steer the ball away from danger, and ultimately seal all three points and Chesterfield’s first win of the season.
