REPORT: Spireites suffer 1-0 defeat at home to high-flyers Sutton

Donavan Wilson’s 34th minute strike proved the difference as Chesterfield suffered their first home defeat under James Rowe at the hands of league-leaders Sutton United.

James Rowe made three changes to the side that lost 2-0 against Maidenhead last time out. Fraser Kerr, Curtis Weston, Jack Clarke and Joel Taylor came into starting eleven to replace Will Evans, Martin Smith, Liam Mandeville and Alex Whittle.

The away side had the better of the opening exchanges. Omar Bugiel turned and played the ball to Wilson who advanced towards goal. He produced a powerful strike however Grant Smith made a strong save to deny him.

Chesterfield carved out their first opportunity soon after when Jak McCourt’s low effort from the edge of the area deflected off Ben Goodliffe into the palms of Dean Bouzanis.

McCourt turned the provider five minutes later when his corner was headed powerfully towards goal by Gavin Gunning however it wasn't on target.

Rowe was forced to make his first substitution in the 22nd minute when Alex Whittle came on to replace the injured Kerr.

Sutton took the lead just over ten minutes later when Wilson broke free on the left and fired past Smith into the far corner. Chesterfield appealed for a foul in the build up however claims were waved away by the referee.

Matt Gray’s side looked to add a second before the break when Bugiel saw his powerful effort from close-range cannon off the near post.

Rowe made one change at the break when he brought Nathan Tyson on for Tom Whelan-switching to two up front.

His side came close to a leveller in the 58th minute when Weston’s half-volley from the edge of the area was deflected wide.

Harry Beautyman recorded a shot on target a few minutes later as did Akwasi Asante at the other end.

In the 80th minute Weston let fly from inside the area which forced Bouzanis to pull off an impressive save to tip over.

It took too long for Chesterfield to get going as they only really threatened in front of goal in the final ten minutes. The visitors impressed and stuck to their game plan which meant they took home all three points and condemned Chesterfield to back-to-back defeats for the first time under James Rowe.

Chesterfield (3-4-2-1): Smith; Kerr (Whittle 22’), Gunning (C) (Hollis 69’) , Maguire; Carline, McCourt, Weston, Taylor; Whelan (Tyson 46’), Clarke; Asante

Unused Substitutes: Mandeville, Dinanga
