Pressure piles on John Sheridan as Chesterfield were subject to a 4-0 thrashing away to Sutton United.
Sheridan made three changes to the side that secured Chesterfield’s first victory of the season. New signing Gevaro Nepomuceno made his debut, whilst Robbie Weir and Mike Fondop also came into the starting eleven.
Liam Mandeville and Tom Denton (who would have been a risk on the artificial pitch after his injury) had to make do with the bench, whilst Laurence Maguire was left out due to illness.
The Spireites started off well, with Curtis Weston’s effort from just outside the box deflected wide in the opening minutes.
The visitors came agonisingly close in the 18th minute when skipper Will Evans rattled the crossbar with his volley.
But it wasn’t enough and the Spireites were left chasing the game again when Aaron Jarvis took the lead for Sutton in the 23rd minute, poking home David Ajiboye’s cross at the back post.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors just over ten minutes later. Johnathan Smith’s poor backpass allowed the home side to double their lead through Tommy Wright who slotted the ball into the net from close range.
With around an hour gone, Liam Mandeville and Tom Denton were brought on to try and savour Chesterfield’s hopes of getting something from the game.
But it wasn't long before Jarvis fired home his second of the afternoon, putting his side three goals to the good on 77.
Chesterfield had a mountain to climb but the task was made impossible in the final minutes of injury time when Harry Beautyman latched onto Omar Bugiel’s ball across goal to tap into the net.
Sutton United secured their first home victory of the season while the Spireites still struggle with just one win in 12 games.
