REPORT: Stunning Mawbey strike puts Dronfield back on track

A stunning finish from Dronfield Town’s Callum Mawbey broke a four game losing streak and sent the Derbyshire side back to seventh in the Northern Counties East League Division One table, following a 3-2 win away at Ollerton Town. An entertaining encounter played out at the Fast Frame Stadium saw Dronfield take all three points following strikes from Joe Pearson and a brace from Mawbey, matched by two goals from his striking opponent, Ollerton’s Jack Hollis-Smith. The win gives a welcome boost to Town ahead of the visit of league newcomers Beverley Town on Saturday.

An uneven surface at the Fast Frame saw both sides choosing to take the aerial route on many occasions but this didn’t detract from the spectacle of a fast-paced and committed encounter. When the opening goal came, it was in favour of the visitors.

On nine minutes, a low ball into the Ollerton box was met by the oncoming Joe Pearson, who made no mistake in thundering the ball into the roof of the net to give Dronfield a 1-0 lead.

It took Ollerton a further 22 minutes to get back on level terms. A useful cross was whipped in from the right wing and it was met by a glancing header from Jack Hollis-Smith to give Lewis Naylor no chance in the Dronfield net and put the teams on parity at 1-1.

A speculative effort from 35 yards by recent Ollerton signing Adam Scott almost caught Naylor unawares but it just evaded the crossbar as Dronfield got the lead that they would take into half time.

Matty Ord’s second attempt at delivering the ball from the left flank was much more effective, being met by the head of Callum Mawbey at the back post and looping over Owen Evans to make it 2-1 to Dronfield.

Dronfield survived a spell of early pressure in the second half as the lively Alfie Dodsworth and Hollis-Smith put the visitors rearguard under the cosh.

Ollerton found the back of the net through Jake Squires just past the hour mark but the referee disallowed the goal for an infringement. However, the home side didn’t have to wait long to get back on level terms.

On 66 minutes, Lewis Bingham found former Dronfield player Squires out on the right, who managed to deliver with precision for Hollis-Smith to head home and make it 2-2.

Dronfield withdrew Joe Pearson and introduced Tom Gladwin in a bid get a foothold in the middle of the pitch. Gladwin had an immediate impact as he fed Mawbey out on the left edge of the area, who lashed a terrific half volley past Evans into the top corner.

Dronfield held firm for the remainder of the contest and were delighted with a hard-working 3-2 victory and a final goal that was worthy of the win.

The success sees Dronfield break a four game losing streak and take an important three points in a division where the sides in sixth to sixteenth are separated by just six points. Dronfield welcome one of those sides, fourteenth-placed league newcomers Beverley Town, to the HE Barnes Stadium on Saturday.
