The match that might never exist after Scunthorpe vs Buxton was abandoned late on

Buxton were 2-1 leaders after being reduced down to 10 men and saving a penalty in the final minutes of the game before the referee blew up for what everyone believed to have been full time. It was about 5 minutes later and it was announced that the game had in fact been abandoned.

The Bucks started the game on the front foot, attacking with pace against the league leaders and getting a cross into the area that was over hit before going out of play.

Scunthorpe’s first opening of the game came from a ball by Jacob Butterfield that Tyler Denton headed on to Cameron Wilson who struck his shot at the goal and Max Dearnley was forced into tipping the shot over the bar.

Eoin McKeown charged towards goal on the 22nd minute finding himself in a one on one situation however the Buxton winger couldn’t quite get his bearings with The Iron’s defence clearing their lines.

Jake Wright picked up a long over the top through ball from Tommy Elliott and won Buxton a corner. And 2 minutes later Wright was taken out in the box by Shrimpton the referee pointed to spot and awarded a penalty.

Wright also stepped up to take the penalty with Ross Fitzsimons saving it and the rebound being smashed home by Xander McBurnie to grab his first goal for the club and give Buxton the lead.

And it wasn’t the final event of the first half as Connor Brown got sent off for an off the ball reaction and the Bucks went into the second half a man down.

The sending off hit Buxton hard having to do a lot of defending and Craig Elliott made his first change bringing on Max Hunt for McKeown.

Dearnley who was very busy in the second half claimed a cross from a nicely worked Scunthorpe move in the 55th minute.

The Irons continued to push on as Max Kouogun also came close with his header going just over the bar.

Centre Back Will Evans was next to try his luck hitting a shot from long range with a lot of power that made Dearnley have to make a stop over the bar.

Possibly the best opportunity of the half so far came from Scunthorpe after a ball from Wilson was intercepted in the box with the striker not able to get on the end of it.

And with all the pressure from the hosts they managed to grab the equaliser after Dearnley appeared to drop the ball it came back to Substitute Bennett and he fired it into the net to make it 1-1 with 10 minutes left of the game.

The ending to the game can only be described in the craziest I have ever witnessed!

Buxton despite the sending off regained their lead only 2 minutes later. Max Hunt leaped into the air and was free in the box to head it into the net for 2-1.

Scunthorpe then attacking with all they could Buxton were defending well. Josh Granite headed it over, Luke Shiels put in a block on the line and it looked like they were stopping the threat.

Until into added time the referee pointed to the spot and awarded the second penalty of the game this time to the hosts! And it was the second penalty saved of the game as well with Dearnley standing firm to deny another equaliser.

The rain had been coming down in buckets for the last 20 minutes or so and the ball was struggling to be kicked about on the pitch with players slipping and sliding all over.

The referee came over to the side line after picking the ball up and had appeared to have blown for full time with 5 minutes of added time left to be played.

The Buxton players and staff were celebrating in what they thought was a hard fought win.

However, it was later announced that 5 minutes later that the match had been abandoned.
