REPORT: Chesterfield put four past Woking away from home

Chesterfield returned to winning ways on their first ever visit to the Laithwaite Community Stadium after producing an emphatic 4-1 win over strugglers Woking.

James Rowe made five changes to his starting eleven. James Montgomery, Curtis Weston, Joe Rowley, Tom Whelan and Marcus Dinanga replaced Grant Smith, Martin Smith, Liam Mandeville, Alex Whittle and Kairo Mitchell.

Chesterfield started on the front foot and took the lead 7 minutes in when the unmarked Gavin Gunning headed home from Whelan’s corner.

Town looked to double their lead two minutes later when George Carline tested Craig Ross however the Woking keeper stood firm to deny him.

The Spireites were dealt with yet another injury blow when Fraser Kerr was forced off in the 17th minute after putting in a strong tackle. Jak McCourt came on to replace the defender.

The reshuffle at the back didn’t stop them in their tracks as they added a second goal two minutes later. It came from another Whelan corner which was spilled by Ross into the path of Dinanga who tapped in.

Woking halved the deficit from the penalty spot a few minutes later when Laurence Maguire was judged to have brought down Kane Ferdinand inside the penalty area. Charlie Cooper stepped up and struck home- his strike deflecting off Montgomery’s feet into the right corner.

Alan Dowson’s side went close to grabbing an equaliser a minute later when Malachi Napa fired wide from a dangerous position.

His side were made to pay for their missed chance when Chesterfield extended their lead on the edge of half-time. Another Whelan corner caused havoc with Maguire getting a touch on it before the ball fell to Carline who smashed into the back of the net to put Chesterfield 3-1 up.

The Spireites nearly grabbed a fourth from a Whelan corner in the 52nd minute when Carline headed narrowly wide.

Montgomery made two important saves in the later stages of the half. First to deny Robinson who went one on one and before a magnificent save to stop Cooper.

Substitue Jack Clarke got in on the act four minutes from time when he met Danny Rowe’s cross from the right and tapped in to wrap up the points for Chesterfield.

Chesterfield: Montgomery, Carline, Kerr (McCourt 17’), Gunning, Maguire Oyeleke, Weston, Rowley (Mandeville 59’), Whelan (Clarke 75’), Dinanga, Rowe.

Unused substitutes: Yussuf, Tyson.
