Scott Boden’s first half penalty miss proved the turning point as the Magpies condemned Chesterfield to a 3-0 defeat and a first loss with John Pemberton in charge.
Pemberton named an unchanged side from last Saturday’s draw with AFC Fylde. Nathan Tyson was not included in the squad due to the fixture being against his parent club.
The hosts were to claim the first shot of the match when Cal Roberts tried his luck at goal from outside the area.
Connell Rawlinson latched onto Enzio Boldewijn’s dangerous cross at the far post and saw his header come back off the post. The rebound fell to Wes Thomas but the linesman had his flag up.
It wasn’t long before County hit the woodwork again, this time it was Boldewijn who’s free-kick rattled the crossbar.
The Spireites weren’t looking dangerous infront of goal but had a chance in the minute when Jordan Cropper swung a cross to Boden, who headed over.
However, Chesterfield were presented with a golden opportunity to take the lead five minutes before half time when David Buchanan was dragged down by Richard Brindley inside the penalty area. Boden stepped up, but his weak strike was kept out by former Spireites loanee Ross Fitzimons.
The two sides went into the second half on level terms but it didn’t take the home side long to open the scoring. In the 52nd minute Boldewijn ran through the Chesterfield midfield to smash a screamer into the top right corner.
However, the Spireites nearly levelled a few minutes later when Tom Denton saw his half-volley ricochet off the bar.
County top scorer Kyle Wootton doubled the Magpies lead on 59 minutes when his diving header flew past Shwan Jalal.
The Spireites nearly pulled one back when David Buchanan let fly from range, forcing Fitzimons to pull off an impressive stop.
But the hosts made it three in the 76th minute. Winger Boldewijn saw his shot from the left saved by Jalal before the rebound fell to Wootton who tapped it in.
Despite a few half-chances in the closing stages, Chesterfield couldn’t find the back of the net and fell to a 3-0 defeat against their local rivals Notts County.
