REPORT: Dronfield exit the Vase at the hands of Premier Division Beverley

Dronfield Town exited the FA Vase at the first time of asking against Northern Counties East League Premier Division Beverley Town. The East Yorkshire side were yet to win a fixture but took a 2-1 half time lead through a Daniel Earl brace either side of a Callum Mawbey leveller. The lively Luca Suluburic extended Beverley’s lead five minutes after the restart and they weathered any Dronfield pressure for the remainder of the half to ensure their passage to the next round. Dronfield now have the league and Derbyshire Senior Cup as their primary focus, beginning on Tuesday evening with the visit of Appleby Frodingham to the HE Barnes Stadium.

The game provided plenty of incident right from the off. After just 3 minutes, Daniel Earl found himself clean through for Beverley but put his shot wide with just Dronfield skipper Lewis Naylor to beat.

Dronfield replied in kind as an on-rushing Sam Bebbington powered his header over the bar from a Connor Chapell corner but it took only 9 minutes for Beverley to open their account.

The East Yorkshire outfit appeared to be offside but Suluburic’s delivery from the left was finished at close range by Earl to give them a 1-0 advantage.

Suluburic used his pace once again to play in Cameron Connelly but Lewis Naylor pulled off a useful one-on-one stop to keep Dronfield in the contest.

A tactical change paid dividends for the hosts. Callum Mawbey was advanced up the field from his starting centre half berth and on 27 minutes, Dronfield pulled level.

A long free kick forward from the left hand side was met by the head of Mawbey to restore parity at 1-1.

The joy only lasted 10 minutes. A soft penalty saw Connor Chapell unfortunately connect with Daniel Earl leaving the referee to point to the spot. Earl dusted himself off to put the visitors up by 2-1.

Earl was substituted two minutes into added time at the end of the half but it wasn’t to the detriment of the Beverley display.

Dronfield looked bright in the opening five minutes of the second period but things soon unravelled. Beverley’s William Taylor received a yellow card for kicking the ball away near his own goal but within an instant, his side were in the Dronfield box as Suluburic sold Naylor a dummy and walked the ball into the net to make it 3-1.

Try as Dronfield might, they couldn’t find a way back into the contest. On 64 minutes, Town’s Charlie Stewart aerially challenged Beverley keeper Johnathon Dash and as the ball dropped, Tom Gladwin fired over the bar on the half volley from the edge of the area.

Dronfield’s best opportunity came on 76 minutes when James Lindores found space on the right flank but Max Rhodes headed his testing cross wide with the goal at his mercy.

Dash made two further saves from the Dronfield striker as the hosts became increasingly desperate and the Beverley stopper was called upon to tip a fierce 30 yard Riley Noble free kick over the bar deep in stoppage time.

The Vase hasn’t been a kind competition to Dronfield in recent times and so it proved once again. A renewed focus on what the North Derbyshire side does well is required, starting with the visit of Appleby Frodingham in the league to Stonelow on Tuesday evening.
