Dronfield Town won out in the battle of the bottom two sides in the Northern Counties East League Division One with a 3-1 victory over Teversal FC. Sam Bebbington’s brace plus a late Mark Fereday free kick sealed the points for the Derbyshire side to lift them to eighteenth in the table after Teversal had levelled matters mid-way through the second half. Town will be looking to continue their unbeaten run with a road trip to Nostell Miners Welfare, themselves beaten 5-0 by Parkgate, next Saturday.
It took ten minutes before Teversal’s Tom Widdowson had a long range effort smothered by Richard Henson in the Dronfield goal.
Dronfield’s first real chance came on twenty minutes and they were to go on to dominate the rest of the half. Sam Bebbington’s flick on saw the ball eventually being lifted over the bar by the pacy Sam Terry.
Three minutes later, Stuart Hill’s stooping header from a free kick out on the left was gratefully collected by Teversal custodian Michael Ball.
Town broke the deadlock on the half hour mark. Terry’s first time cross from the right was turned goalward by Callum Mawbey and after Ball’s save, Bebbington was on hand to tap home from close range.
Leading the line, Mawbey found the side netting just a minute later from the edge of the area and five minutes from half time, Dronfield’s Jamie Willis appeared to have been upended in the box; the referee waving away the Town claims for a spot kick.
Teversal found their better moments by playing on the break and it required Henson to clear the danger two minutes from time with the lively Cameron Pinnick bearing down on goal.
Dronfield had the opening effort of the second half – Bebbington finding the hands of Ball after Terry’s long throw from the left hand side.
A ten minute spell saw the visitors eventually draw level. Pinnick was allowed to turn on to his left boot and fire narrowly over the bar on fifty seven minutes and just two minutes later, Jack Hutchinson’s right wing cross was met by the head of Bradley Hall from six yards out, Henson making a crucial save as the ball was cleared.
On sixty four minutes, a long ball found Teversal top scorer Pinnick, whose shot was excellently charged down by Henson on the penalty spot.
Tevie did draw level on seventy minutes however. Henson misjudged an attempt to claim the ball and being stranded from his goal, Bradley Hall lifted the ball over the Town defenders into the goal to make it 1-1.
That level status only lasted two minutes as Dronfield reclaimed their lead. Good work by Bebbington down the left hand side saw him cut into the box and calmly fire low past Ball in the Teversal goal to make it 2-1.
Spurred on by Bebbington’s fourth goal in two games, Town held firm as both sides made a raft of changes. The win was sealed one minute into added time. Substitute Mark Fereday drove a free kick out on the left edge of the penalty area through the Teversal wall and past Ball between the sticks.
The win sees Dronfield climb two places in the table to eighteenth ahead of a visit to Nostell MW next Saturday. Town’s work ethic was typified by the endless running of Owen Lester in central midfield and manager Chris Millington will be looking for more of the same to continue the recent revival and climb up the league standings.
