A late strike from former Alfreton winger John Johnston snatched the points as the Reds were beaten 3-2 by Altrincham at Moss Lane.
Johnston arrowed a strike into the top left corner in the 84th minute to put his ahead and leave Alfreton with very little time to respond.
Alfreton had managed to find equalisers twice in the game, with Danny Clarke scoring in the first half and Danny East levelling the game just into the second, but couldn’t find a third.
The Reds were behind after 22 minutes when Connor Hampson’s deflected volley found its way past Jack Atkinson in the Alfreton goal.
But Alfreton responded just 12 minutes later, Josh Clackstone headed a ball across goal which Danny Clarke managed to bundle over the line for his first goal of the season.
The game continued to be wide open, with Altrincham regaining the lead before the end of the half.
A wild tackle for Dom Smith gave the home side a free kick on the left side of the box, the ball bounced around the Alfreton box before James Jones managed to force it over the line.
The Reds were left feeling unfortunate to be behind at the break, with two strong claims for a penalty.
Clarke was brought down around the box, with Alfreton claiming the offence took place inside the box. After much delegation between the referee and linesman, a free kick was awarded.
Bobby Johnson stepped up to take the free kick, but his effort thundered back off the post. Alfreton put the ball back in the box before claiming that a defender had handled the ball, the cries where once again waved away.
Alfreton came straight out of the blocks in the second half and found themselves level almost instantly. Danny East was left in acres of space and the midfielder confidently slotted home to level proceedings once again.
The hosts grew back into the game and were looking to regain the lead, but the Alfreton defence looked as if it would hold strong.
But it would be the former Alfreton man John Johnston who would snatch the points, his effort flying into the top left corner.
The Reds were visibly disappointed to walk away with nothing following a solid performance and will be desperate to return to winning ways as they face Bradford Park Avenue this weekend.
