REPORT: Spireites held to goalless draw by Boreham Wood

Chesterfield’s five-game winning streak came to an end at the Technique Stadium as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Luke Garrard’s side.

James Rowe opted for three changes to his starting eleven. New signings Kairo Mitchell and Manny Oyeleke came straight into the team along with Tom Whelan who returned to the side after scoring the winner off the bench on Saturday.

Chesterfield started brightly and had the first opportunity of the game. It was Mitchell who rose highest to get on the end of Alex Whittle’s cross however he couldn’t get the right connection and his header looped over.

In the 17th minute Corey Whiteley found space on the edge of the Chesterfield box and blazed an effort over the crossbar.

At the other end Gavin Gunning’s free-kick was headed across goal to Akwasi Asante who tested Nathan Ashmore in the Boreham Wood goal.

Just after the half hour mark Kabongo Tshimanga came close when his strike from a tight-angle was tipped over by Grant Smith.

The biggest chance of the half fell to Asante when Ashmore spilled Curtis Weston’s long-range effort into his path. The striker couldn’t keep the ball down, firing his shot high and wide.

Chesterfield came close again to taking the lead just before the break, when Gunning’s free-kick bobbled around in the box before falling to Fraser Kerr who’s effort crept past the near post.

In a stop-start second half chances were few and far between.

Just after the hour mark Asante looked to be through on goal but Mark Rickets got back to dispossess him. The tackle left the striker with a knee injury and was subbed off moments later.

In the latter stages the momentum swung in Boreham Wood’s favour and they thought they’d got the winner in the 85th minute. Corey Whitely’s corner flew straight in the back of the net but the goal was ruled out for a foul on Spirietes’ keeper Smith.

Neither team could find a breakthrough and the game ended goalless. Boreham Wood returned South with their 10th draw in 12 games and the point moved Chesterfield up to 5th in the table.

Chesterfield (3-5-2): Smith; Kerr, Gunning, Maguire; Carline, Weston, Oyeleke, Whelan (Mandeville 70’), Whittle; Mitchell, Asante (Tyson 65’)
