Tom Whelan’s 37th minute half-volley proved the difference as Chesterfield beat Weymouth to climb into the play-off places for the first time this season.
James Rowe made two changes to his starting eleven. Nathan Tyson replaced Adi Yussuf to make his first start since returning from injury and Whelan replaced Jack Clarke who missed out due to fatigue.
The Spireites started well and notched up a few opportunities in the opening ten minutes. Whelan and Tyson steered efforts wide before Akwasi Asante hit the woodwork in the 6th minute. Whelan drove forwards into space and found the Spirietes number nine who saw his strike from the edge of the box hit the post.
Rowe was forced to make his first change in the 25th minute when Laurence Maguire was forced off with injury. Josef Yarney came on to take his place.
The game turned a bit scrappy and the visitors sent a few dangerous balls into the area however Chesterfield dealt with them all well.
It was Whelan who found the breakthrough in the 37th minute when he opened the scoring against his old club. Following Martin Smith's free-kick the ball bobbled around and Dominic Revan tried to clear however the ball fell to Whelan who turned and fired into the far corner.
Ten minutes after the break Brian Stock’s side thought they’d found a leveller. A corner was headed towards goal and bounced down off the underside of the crossbar. Weymouth claimed that the ball had crossed the line however man in the middle Aaron Jackson waved away their appeals.
Substitute Liam Mandeville had a late chance to double the Spireites’ lead however his effort from the edge of the box whisked past the far post.
Chesterfield (3-5-2): G Smith, Carline, Kerr, Hollis, Maguire (Yarney 25'), Whittle, M Smith, Weston, Whelan (Mandeville 73'), Tyson (Dinanga 61'), Asante.
