REPORT: Spireites return to winning ways

Chesterfield produced an impressive performance from start to finish as they claimed a comfortable 2-0 victory over Barnet at The Hive .

Tom Whelan put the Spireites ahead in the 11th minute before Adi Yussuf all-but sealed victory for Town a few minutes into the second half.

James Rowe made three changes to the eleven that lost to league-leaders Sutton in midweek. Haydn Hollis, Alex Whittle and Yussuf replaced Gavin Gunning, Joel Taylor and Jak McCourt.

Chesterfield flew out of the blocks and should have opened the scoring within the first 15 seconds. Jack Clarke disposessed Harry Taylor and played Yussuf through on goal however the striker fired wide.

A few minutes later Courney Baker-Richards nearly scored an own goal when he headed Clarke’s corner onto the bar at the back post.

Whittle also had an opportunity on the edge of the area but his strike crept wide.

In the 11th minute Whelan opened the scoring, Clarke was involved once again when he played through to Whelan who remained composed to slot past Aymen Azaze in the Barnet goal.

The home side passed the ball around well in spells but failed to carve out any real chances with Chesterfield unlucky to only be one goal ahead at the break.

The Spireites started the second half on the front foot and doubled their lead a couple of minutes in when Akwasi Asante’s low and powerful free-kick was spilled by the ‘keeper into the path of Yussuf who tapped home from close range.

Asante was unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet when his strike cannoned off the inside of the post in the 60th minute.

A couple of minutes later Rowe switched up his attack with Marcus Dinanga and Nathan Tyson coming on to replace Yussuf and Asante.

It took until the 89th minute for Barnet to create their best chance of the game when Ephron Mason-Clark’s overhead kick flew over the bar.

The Bees were reduced to ten men in additional time when Ben Richards-Everton was shown a straight red card for a foul on Tyson in the middle of the pitch.

Chesterfield (3-5-2): G.Smith; Kerr, Hollis, Maguire; Carline, Weston, Clarke, Whelan (Rowley 74'); Yussuf (Tyson 64'), Asante (Dinanga 64').
