REPORT: Spireites secure a point in Kent

Super sub Marc-Antoine Fortune's strike secured a point for Chesterfield against fellow National League strugglers Maidstone United.

A chance came early on for the visitors, when Charlie Carter put the ball into the box, which was met at the back post by Tom Denton who managed to head just over the bar.

The Spireites came close again in the 25th minute when Carter's half-volley meant that Stones 'keeper Lee Worgan had to produce a decent save to stop his side from going a goal down.

Once again another defensive mishap cost the Spireites dearly, when Laurence Maguire's header dropped to West Ham youth product Blair Turgott who put the ball past Callum Burton to put Maidstone 1-0 up, fifteen minutes before the break.

In the 66th minute, Worgan saved Maidstone's one goal advantage when Will De Haviland nearly headed the ball into his own net, which was set to go in until Worgen rescued the ball and sent it wide.

Chesterfield found an equaliser in the 75th minute when substitute Fortune slotted the ball in from the right, past Worgen and into the back of the net with his fourth this season, making him lead goal scorer for the boys in blue.

Five minutes later, Jack Paxman slipped the ball into goal-scorer Turgott but his effort was blocked by Burton's legs and the Stones failed to grab a late winner, leaving things level at the Gallagher Stadium.

Post-Match Verdict: A better performance but not good enough

Under normal circumstances a point would be a good result away from home, but now without a win in eleven, a point is just not enough. One mistake cost the Spireites again.

Anyone would have thought that a point was a fantastic result, looking at the way Callum Burton was time wasting in the final minutes, but a win is long overdue now for the Spireites and they need to turn the tide ASAP.

The majority of the 252 travelling supporters weren't afraid to make their feelings heard and it is clear to see the frustration around the club at the moment, but surely with an experienced manager, who won this league with Barnet a few years ago, Chesterfield's luck has got to come good eventually.
