REPORT: Spireites slump to defeat against high-flying Halifax

Chesterfield's winless run this season extended to nine games after falling to a 3-2 defeat to top of the league, Halifax Town.

John Sheridan made two changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday. Robbie Weir and Josef Yarney made way for Liam Mandeville and Jermaine McGlashen.

It took the Shaymen eight minutes to open the scoring, possession was gained in the middle of the pitch which allowed Cameron King to put the ball through to Jamie Allen who slotted home to score his first goal for the Yorkshire club.

Scott Boden had a half-chance to level ten minutes later but the former-Halifax striker headed it wide of Sam Johnson’s goal.

In the 32nd minute Halifax should have doubled their lead, Tobi Sho-Silva saw his powerful strike ricochet off the crossbar.

It wasn’t long before Pete Wild’s men did find the back of the net again. Nathan Clarke was left unmarked from a corner and headed home to double the away side's lead.

Just over a minute into the second half the visitors added to the scoresheet again. King picked the ball up inside the area and turned to tuck the ball into the net through Coddington’s legs.

The Spireites pulled a goal back just three minutes later. Mike Fondop latched onto McGlashen’s cross and volleyed it home and out of the reach of Johnson.

Former Chesterfield trials Liam McAlinden let fly from range, bringing Coddington to attention, but the former Wrexham keeper dealt with it well.

A Haydn Hollis mistake allowed Allen through to play the ball into Sho-Silva, the resulting effort was cleared off the line by Will Evans.

Fondop found the ball inside the area and played it back out to Mandeville who smashed a shot toward goal, forcing Johnson to produce a great stop.

Joe Rowley managed to reduce the Shaymen’s lead in the 89th minute. He slotted the effort into the bottom right corner from outside the area.

The Yorkshire saw the rest of the game out though and claimed all three points. This put Halifax top of the table on goal difference, while the Spireites look ahead to their trip to Bromley on Saturday, in hope of finding their first win to lift them out of the relegation zone.
