REPORT: Spireites sunk by Harrogate's second half flurry

Mike Fondop’s opener was not enough to claim any points in North Yorkshire as the Spireites slid to a 3-1 loss to play-off hopefuls Harrogate Town.

John Sheridan made six changes to the side that fell to defeat against Chorley. Fondop, Liam Mandeville, Laurence Maguire, Gevaro, Jermaine McGlashan and debutant Liam Shaw all came into the side.

Jack Diamond found the first opportunity of the match when his effort from outside the box was smothered by Shwan Jalal.

But it was Chesterfield who opened the scoring just 10 minutes in. McGlashan beat his man to cut inside and cross the ball into the box, Fondop with the final touch firing home.

Ten minutes later, the two players linked up again. McGlashan found the striker, who couldn’t direct his header on target.

The Spireites looked very lively going forward as Mandeville’s free kick and Fondop’s 20 yard volley tested Cameron Belshaw in the Harrogate goal.

However Weaver’s side found their equaliser in the 37th minute when skipper Josh Falkingham fired the ball into the right corner of the net to level.

The Spireites could well have taken the lead just before the break but Mandeville poked his effort over the bar.

As the second half got underway the home side were on the front foot and deservedly took the lead 65 minutes in when Ryan Fallowfield unleashed an effort into the top corner.

Soon after, the hosts nearly made it three as Jalal could only palm out Mark Beck’s effort into the path of Jack Muldoon but the striker couldn’t find the target, firing it over the bar.

Muldoon soon put things right when he found the back of the net in the 70th. Chesterfield lost possession in the middle of the pitch allowing the ball to be played through to Muldoon who took it round Jalal and tapped home.

The defeat leaves the Spireites in 20th place, just two points above Wrexham in the relegation zone.

Chesterfield: Jalal, Buchanan, Evans, Maguire, Sheridan, McGlashan, Weston (Smith 74), Shaw, Gevaro, Mandeville, Fondop (Boden 63).

Unused Substitutes: Coddington, Rowley, Weir.

Attendance: 1,710
