Staveley share the spoils with Shirebrook!

Staveley Miners Welfare welcomed Shirebrook Town to Inkersall Road hoping to equal their best start to a league campaign in a decade.

Six changes were made to the side that won 2-0 away at Glasshoughton Welfare little over a week ago with Niall Edge retaining his place in goal for the Trojans.

Returns to the line-up were on the cards for Zander Duhameau, Jack Allerton and Max Cook with Jack Dolman being named on the bench.

The action started from the first minute and the Trojans were fortunate not to be behind inside the opening five minutes. Fabian Johnson showcased excellent foot work on the right hand side before dragging the ball back for Josh Parfitt to completely miss the target.

It was only a few moments after this that the hosts took the lead, Max Cook's effort at the back post rebounded off the crossbar and Reece Clegg was first to react to open his account for the season.

The goal didn't stop the visitors though, the first chance was Ashley Grayson's header from a free-kick forced a quick reaction save from Niall Edge. The second was quick footwork from Adam Smith on the left hand side before his cross was met by Parfitt who made no mistake from 6-yards out to level the game.

Smith turned scorer shortly after the first water break dribbling past multiple Staveley players before placing the ball past Edge to complete Shirebrook's turnaround.

The first half action wasn't done there, the Trojans enjoyed a good spell of possession and eventually capitalised on it, Marley Grant's flick from an acute angle was headed home by Clegg for his second of the game.

The hosts started the second half how they ended the first, confident and controlling the game from the midfield. A well executed free-kick made it's way through the sea of players before finding an unmarked Sam Kay at the back post who put the hosts back in front.

The referee had controlled the game quite well and he had his first test when he was challenged with if to send off Shirebrook skipper, Ashley Grayson.

Grayson was first booked for a challenge on Zander Duhameau but was later dismissed for a high-footed challenge on Jacob Pearce. The challenge left Pearce substituted holding his shoulder.

It wouldn't take long for the 10-men of Shirebrook Town to find an equaliser, despite having the extra player, Staveley's defence were put to the test and eventually this would break. Joshua Devereux's perfectly placed free-kick from 20-yards out flew past Edge to bring the game level.

Staveley re-established their form towards the final 10 minutes of the game as Grant, Clegg and Duhameau had chances, but the crossbar and Joseph Dunn were on hand to ensure that both sides took away a point.

Neither side could argue in the final score as a point was a fair result for two hard-working sides in a game that really could have gone either way. Up next for Staveley is a trip to Swallownest on Saturday, August 13th, 2022.

Line-Up: Edge, Cook, Claxton, Whittaker, Allerton, Kay, Grant, Wilson, Clegg, Pearce (Mitchell), Duhameau.

Subs not Used: Axel, Roebuck, Ross, Dolman.

Player of the Match: Reece Clegg.
