One point apiece between Derby County Women and Loughborough Lightning

Derby County Women failed to hold onto their lead as they drew 1-1 with Loughborough Lightning at the Don Amott Arena.

The Rams took the lead early on in the game through Ellie Gilliatt, however early in the second half, Abbie Bensted equalised for the Lightning.

It was an early start from the Ewe Rams who got their first goal after just six minutes of play. Gilliatt fired home the opener after a good ball in from Sophie Domingo.

A few minutes later it looked like the goal would be repeated with a carbon copy but Gilliatt couldn't get her shot off in time and instead sent the ball drifting wide.

Derb commanded the first half from the get-go and as it went on they continued to create chances and with Precious Hamilton and Gillatt looking dangerous a second before the break was expected.

However, the visitors defended well, coping with the numerous chances Derby created well. With the Ewe Rams unable to double their lead in the first 45 minutes, they went into the break 1-0 up.

There was another goal in the second half but it wasn't for Derby. Loughborough took the lead just ten minutes after the break as Bensted hit a superb strike from long range to equalise for the lightning.

The game had opened up after the two goals and with 20 minutes to go Domingo struck the bar as the Rams chased the winner. Just a few minutes later the visitors also hit the bar with both sides struggling for a winner.

With only ten minutes to go academy prospect, Marli Rhodes-Andrews made her debut replacing the ever-present Domingo.

However, nothing either side did would change the result with the points being evenly divided between the two sides.

The result leaves Derby County in the top three of the FA Women's National League, keeping them in the promotion hunt.

Ewe Rams face league leaders AFC Fylde away in their next match as they look to continue their push for promotion.
