REPORT: Bucks beaten at home

Buxton suffered late heartbreak as Glenn Steel's late header secured a rare 2-1 away victory for Lancaster City.

The Bucks were unbeaten in their last seven league matches heading into the game against Lancaster, who contrastingly had lost their last five away games in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier division.

It appeared that both runs would continue that way as the home side took the lead on five minutes through Diego De Girolamo, firing in on the rebound after Bradley Roscoe’s header was cleared off the line.

Buxton went in search of a second shortly after with Liam Hardy through on goal but failing to get a strike away at the dolly blues net as Jack Simms commanded his area well to snatch the ball away from danger.

On 32 minutes City came close after the ball was squared across the box and fired point blank at Theo Roberts, who made a great save to force a corner. From the resulting set-piece, Glenn Steel met the header but directed the ball straight into the accepting grasp of Theo Roberts.

After the break, it was the bucks initially looking the more comfortable side. Bradley Grayson turned the city defence and got a shot away at goal but lacking enough power to beat Simms.

The away side turned the game on its head when Lewis Fensome headed in the equaliser on 59 minutes, meeting an inch-perfect cross to bury the ball past Roberts and dramatically change the mood at the Silverlands.

City were now in the ascendancy and pressured the buck’s defence with Matt Blinkhorn finding space and drifting his shot just wide of goal before testing Roberts directly with a header from a free kick.

Buxton had to respond but couldn't quite make the breakthrough as Tom Dean volleyed just wide of the post on 71 minutes before glancing his header wide from a corner ten minutes later.

A huge chance then went begging for the bucks as substitute Kayde Coppin played an excellent ball across goal, met by the feet of Alex Brown who could only fire the ball over the crossbar when it should have been easier to slot into the back of the net.

On the stroke of 90 minutes City's Glenn Steal broke the hearts of the Silverlands home faithful by burying his header past Theo Roberts after being left completely unmarked from a corner.

The home 'keeper watched helplessly as the ball rattled the back of the net and wondered what could have been had his side taken earlier chances.

Tom Dean's late strike nearly rescued a point back for the Bucks but City were desperate to put an end to their miserable away form and Jack Simms sealed the result for the away side, pulling off a great save as Buxton pressured the Dolly Blues net for one last time before the final whistle.

Lancaster delightedly took all three points back to Lancashire as Buxton rued a week of missed opportunities following their FA Cup exit on Tuesday night and an unexpected blow to their league campaign on Saturday.

Post-Match Verdict: A week to forget

Failing to capitalise on their FA Cup second qualifying round replay midweek, the defeat to Lancaster will come as another big blow to the home side after carrying such great form in the league and challenging right at the sharp end.

Paul Phillips and Steve Halford may be thankful for such a short wait until their side’s next fixture against South Shields on Tuesday night as it will give them a key opportunity to bounce back and prove themselves as promotion contenders. But they can’t afford to lose any more ground like they did on Saturday.
